Unveiling the complexities of charismatic renewal and Pentecostalism

Join us for this hybrid lecture titled 'Charismatic Renewal and Pentecostalism: Entanglements and Transformations' with Dr John Maiden

Charismatic renewal and Pentecostalism, two dynamic branches of Christianity, have left an indelible mark on the global religious landscape. This lecture will delve into the transformative period between 1945 and 1980 when these two movements experienced unprecedented interaction and convergence.

While traditional narratives often emphasise the Pentecostal contribution to the charismatic renewal, this lecture organised by the Institute for Pentecostal Theology challenges this perspective by proposing an intriguing alternative: that the charismatic renewal, in turn, may have inadvertently 'charismaticised' Pentecostalism. The charismatic renewal's emphasis on spiritual gifts, its openness to diverse expressions of worship, and its focus on personal experiences of the Holy Spirit resonated deeply with many mainline Christians, leading to a transformation of Pentecostalism.

To fully grasp the complexities of this relationship, the lecture delves into case studies from North America, the British Isles, South Africa, and Australasia. These case studies reveal the diverse dynamics of Pentecostal and charismatic interactions across cultural contexts, offering insights into how these movements have evolved and influenced each other.

The lecture concludes by emphasising the importance of understanding these historical developments to make sense of the contours of global Christianity today. The interactions between Pentecostalism and the charismatic renewal have significantly shaped the religious landscape, contributing to its diversity, vibrancy, and global reach.

Join us in person for this lecture at Elim Arts Centre in West Malvern or on Zoom on Wednesday 24 January 2024. For full details and to book your place, visit the Eventbrite page here or use the booking option below.
