A transformation of the heart

A church mission trip to the Watoto project in Uganda proved to be as life changing for the team as it was a blessing to those they served, reports Robyn Chan

Going to Uganda was truly life-changing. Our mission was to renovate homes, but we ended up doing so much more. As I prepared for the trip, I anticipated encountering new challenges and opportunities; but what I experienced completely exceeded my expectations.

I returned home with a fresh perspective, a deeper gratitude for all that God has done in my life, renewed hope, and an extended church family that I’ll cherish forever.

Sometimes, at a big church like ours, it can be difficult to form connections with others. So this trip was a fantastic way to meet new people and accomplish God’s work together. The unity and teamwork we shared made every moment of the trip even more special.

We were blessed to be led by Pastor Stephen Derbyshire and Michele Ngabonziza, who put so much effort into ensuring everything ran smoothly. Their leadership helped us stay focused on our purpose, and their encouragement inspired us every step of the way.

The team in Uganda was equally incredible. A huge shoutout to Irene, Daisy, and Hilary, who took such great care of us, and to Fred and Michael, our dedicated bus drivers, who made sure we got everywhere safely.

Key ministries

The Heart of Watoto reflects the impact of their ministry in Uganda, which operates across three key areas.

Baby Watoto offers care for abandoned babies, providing love, nourishment, and medical attention. A heart-warming yet sobering reminder of the need for compassionate outreach.

Watoto Village gives orphaned and vulnerable children a second chance at family, where they are placed in homes with a mother and siblings, allowing them to grow up in a stable environment. The joy and resilience of the children we encountered underscored the life-changing effect of this programme.

Then the Neighbourhood Women initiative focuses on empowering women by equipping them with skills and education, enabling them to support themselves and their families. This transformative programme offers hope and opportunities to women who might otherwise never have such opportunities.

Through these efforts, Watoto is not only providing care but also creating lasting change for individuals and communities.

Transformed hearts

This experience was so much more than just a mission trip ‒ it was a transformation of the heart. The people we met, the work we did and the stories we heard will stay with us forever.

God moved in powerful ways, not only in the lives of those we served but also in our own.

Leaving Uganda, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude and purpose. This trip was a reminder that no matter where we are in the world, we are all part of God’s family, and we are called to love, serve, and uplift one another.

Uganda changed us, and I know the impact of this journey will continue to shape our lives and faith for years to come.

Meanwhile, Watoto UK Executive Director Andrew White said, “The City Gates team’s visit to Watoto left a lasting impact – transforming two homes and two classrooms, and delivering 324 Bibles. We cannot thank them enough for their incredible service and support.”
