On mission in Scarborough: Elim Evangelism Teams in action

Lives changed as Elim’s first Evangelism Team joins Scarborough Christian Fellowship for a week of mission on the Yorkshire coast.

Elim’s brand-new Evangelism Teams initiative launched this summer with its very first mission week in Scarborough, and what a start it’s been. Team members from across the country came together to support Scarborough Christian Fellowship, joining in with their local outreach and stepping out to share the good news of Jesus.

Gerald Chiatoh from Gloucester Elim spoke of the openness they encountered on the streets:

“We went door knocking yesterday and had some great conversations. People are so open. I met a young guy called Scott who told me about losing his parents, living on the streets and searching for meaning. That day he gave his life to Jesus. As he left, he asked if he could give me a hug in the middle of Scarborough. I could just feel God’s love for him and his joy at discovering there is something bigger holding him.”

For Richard Cairns, from Inside Out Church in Barnsley, it was a return to door-to-door outreach after many years:

“It was amazing how many people came to the door and wanted to engage. One young man sat outside his house listened as I shared my story. It was like telling his own story back to him. He wasn’t quite ready to say the big yes, but he’s definitely on the journey. We were able to introduce him to a local church that is ready to welcome him when the time is right.”

Sarah Weaver, who is leading the Elim Evangelism Teams, said the week has been full of encouragements:

“We’ve seen incredible moments. An 86 and 87-year-old couple married for 65 years said yes to Jesus, a young person gave their life to Christ at a youth meeting, and four others stood up to go deeper with Him. All of that in less than 24 hours, outside the church walls. It’s been a privilege to partner with the church here and to see God moving.”

The Scarborough mission also included youth events, a family quiz and a community barbecue, as well as seaside ice cream. More mission weeks are planned for 2025, and the team is inviting anyone with a passion for sharing Jesus to get involved.

As Richard put it: “The only question is, are you going to jump in? Come and join us, and let’s extend the kingdom together.”
